What do we mean when we talk about the autistic spectrum?
“Spectrum” is in our name, and is a word often associated with autism and neurodiversity. But it can mean different things to different people, and this recent article in The Independent [ https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/autism-spectrum-aspergers-diagnosis-test-b2840797.html ] is a timely reminder of that. For some, the “autistic spectrum” is a line that runs from neurotypical to autistic, with those at the midpoint having some autistic traits. F

Autism & Self-Identity
Research shows that autistic people who embrace their autism enjoy mental health benefits like increased well-being, self-esteem and life satisfaction. However, many autistic teenagers and adults struggle to know who they are due to masking and camouflaging and consequently suffer low-self-esteem, loneliness and depression. It can be difficult to embrace being autistic in a community that largely misunderstands autism and where being autistic still carries a negative stigma.

Find Out About Our Free Autism Screening Service
At Spectrum Autism Services, we understand that recognising potential signs of autism in your child or young person can feel overwhelming. Families often have questions, concerns, or uncertainties – and finding the right service early on can make all the difference. That’s why Spectrum offers a

The Autistic Teacher states, ‘ADHD and Autism often go together! According to the scientific literatur

Understanding ‘Meltdowns’ and ‘Shutdowns’
At Spectrum, one of the most frequent topics we are asked about by parents is how to support their child when they are having a ‘Meltdown’ or a ‘Shutdown’. Firstly, it helps to understand that these behaviours are not deliberate but are involuntary responses to overwhelming and persistent stress. To help explain this, here is an excellent resource by Yellow Ladybugs which is ‘a non-government organisation, dedicated to the happiness, success and celebration of autistic girls,

What is AuDHD?
Many of you will be familiar with the diagnostic labels of Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but did you know that more recently people who show differences across both neurodivergent presentations have begun to identify as AuDHDers? In an excellent article written by Dr Debra Bercovici PhD for the website, Embrace Autism, she explains in detail more about this new terminology: ‘AuDHD is an unofficial but popular term used to describe individuals wh

What does ‘Autism Spectrum’ actually mean?
We are often asked at Spectrum whether once a child or young person has been identified as Autistic whether they will be given a ‘level’ or label to describe where they might be on the ‘Autism Spectrum’. However, as clinical and societal understanding of Autism have evolved, Autistic advocates now talk about the ‘Autism Spectrum’ not as a linear entity from ‘Low-Functioning’ to ‘High-Functioning’ but as a ‘Spectrum’ of Autistic individual attributes and differences (with many
