What is AuDHD?

Many of you will be familiar with the diagnostic labels of Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but did you know that more recently people who show differences across both neurodivergent presentations have begun to identify as AuDHDers?

In an excellent article written by Dr Debra Bercovici PhD for the website, Embrace Autism, she explains in detail more about this new terminology:

‘AuDHD is an unofficial but popular term used to describe individuals who are both Autistic and ADHD. This means that an AuDHDer has been self/formally diagnosed with Autism and ADHD because they have traits characteristic of both conditions… Each condition encompasses an array of different traits, which are experienced in different combinations and with differing intensities by each unique individual. As an AuDHDer, this just means that your combination and intensity of different traits include those associated with both Autism and ADHD instead of only one or the other.’

Also, in an article published in The Guardian last year, they also explore the rise in identification of AuDHD, stating ‘just over a decade ago, Autism and ADHD were thought to be mutually exclusive. But in recent years, all that has changed’. They share the lived experiences of a number of AuDHDers and what having this dual identification means to them.

There is still much research to be done into the co-existence of these two neurodivergent conditions but in the meantime, here at Spectrum, we recognise the validity of this identification and the value it provides to those AuDHDers.
