We had so many families contact us following our last blog about AuDHD that wanted to share another fantastic resource we found about this topic.
Created and shared by The Autistic Teacher, “Autistic and proud! Sharing insight and understanding to help the autistic community” this resource delves deeper into some of the struggles that people with both ADHD and Autism face.
The Autistic Teacher states, ‘ADHD and Autism often go together! According to the scientific literature, 50 to 80% of Autistic individuals also present with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Conversely, up to 50% of those with ADHD are also Autistic. This combination is often called AuDHD by the neurodivergent community. Until 2013, when the word in the DSM-5 was changed, you could not be diagnosed with both despite it being such a common occurrence! Both are a neurodivergent neurotype and have similar brain structure differences according to recent studies. Some people even believe ADHD and Autism are the same thing with a different presentation. While there are many similarities there are also differences. So what is it like to have both?’ The Autistic Teacher goes on to describe how being AuDHD ‘can be a challenge…being Autistic and ADHD can be very challenging and unique for each individual. ADHD can make it difficult to focus, control impulses and regulate energy levels while Autism can affect communication and social interactions. When these two come together, it can feel like an internal battle!’ Check out her post here for further details and more examples of the AuDHD presentation.
