What is the ADOS Observation?

The ADOS Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) is a standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, play and restricted and repetitive behaviors.

There are five different modules of the ADOS-2, which can be used from the age of 12 months through to adult hood, for people of all levels of ability.  The Clinicians involved on your child's assessment will decide upon the appropriate module for your child/young person once the screening questionnaire is completed.

ADOS Observations carried out by our Clinicians will generally take place at your family home.  We find that children/young people are less anxious about meeting our clinician within their home environment.  Of course there are always exceptions to this rule and if your child/young person is uncomfortable with the thought of an unknown person visiting your home, we are always able to arrange a clinic location.

We are aware that most children who are potentially on the autistic spectrum, prefer an informal approach and our Clinicians may arrive wearing casual clothes which can often help a rapport be built more quickly

When observing an older child or adolescent with typical language skills, the clinician will ask the child/young person lots of questions.  These questions will be surrounding friendships and relationships, understanding of emotions, social annoyances and whether the child/young person has every experienced bullying or loneliness.

Our Clinicain will also observe your child/young person for their understanding of social presses, to see how naturally they can fall into a conversation that is not initiated by themselves.  They will also be observed to see how they use social gesture and the type of social gesture that they respond to.

Ideally parents should not be present for the ADOS Observation, however we are aware that this is not possible for some children as the presence of family members can offer some anxiety relief.  We do however ask, that unless prompted by the clinician that you do not become involved in the observation.
